Building your first PC can feel a bit intimidating. In this beginner’s guide, we’ll explain the basics of building a computer and help you get started.
Before you get started, it’s important to determine a budget and figure out how much money you plan to spend on your new machine. This will help you select components that’ll fit within your budget and give you the best possible value.
Once you’ve established a budget, it’s time to pick out the individual components of your new PC. Note that some parts such as the CPU, Motherboard, and PCIe slots need to be compatible with each other, so make sure you double-check each part’s compatibility with the other pieces of your PC. Here’s a checklist of components you’ll need to either purchase or already have:
You’ll need a few tools to build your very own PC. A #2 Phillips head screwdriver will be necessary for installing most of the computer's components. You should also have an antistatic wrist strap to protect your components from static electricity.
Now for the fun part. Begin by laying out all your components on an antistatic surface with the PC box and stand nearby. Before you begin, you’ll want to make sure you install the power supply into the case and screw it in. Next, securely install your processor into the motherboard. Next you’ll need to install RAM, and then the Graphics Card if you have one. Finally, add the hard drive, plug all the cables and wires, and screw the motherboard into the case.
Now it’s time to turn on the PC. Connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse to the PC and hit the power button. Now your PC is up and running and from here you can install Windows (or another operating system) and start customizing your new machine.
Building your first PC can seem daunting, but as long as you take your time and research each component, you should have no problem. Don’t forget to back up all your data and save your important files and documents. Good luck and have fun building your PC!
