A Crap Start to 2023

January 3, 2023
This isn't a post where I'm going to be moaning about the start of my New Year. It's a true acount of how I spent my first day, or at least part, of 2023.
I'll start by saying that I actually had the pleasure of welcoming in the New Year with good company, champagne and a toast to the year ahead. It was really quite pleasant, even if we had eaten enough to make us feel sick. I went to bed having toasted the 2023 in with positive thoughts for the New Year ahead of me. In fairness, even though it was a rather crap start to the New Year today (which I will go into more detail in shortly), I still have a lot of positivity for the year ahead.

Graphic of a toilet
However, I woke up this morning, and my toilet was flushing properly. It wasn't even like it had been used "excessively", the water just wasn't draining away properly or in the time that it usually did. I tried a number of different chemicals in case something had blocked my toilet however nothing was working.

I knew there had to be a blockage somewhere between my toilet and the septic tank which sits next door. Being an "independant woman", I wanted to get it fixed preferably without having to bother by dad to come down with his extending, but far reaching, drain rods. I tried the usual method of getting the toilet to drain properly with limited success. It was time to go check the manhole cover at the back of the house.

Thistles
I rarely go to the back of my house. It's just an oil tank, the aforementioned manhole cover and small pathway that often gets overgrown with brambles if not kept on top of. Luckily, the brambles had been cut back recently which meant when I went to the back of the house, I could see that there was a problem there.

I briefly thought to myself "fml" but then realised that these things happen and there was no point getting peeved about it and that I may as well just get changed into the clothes I liked the least and crack on with getting it sorted.
You don't realise or remember how deep manhole covers are until you're shovelling "organic matter" out of them, however, with perseverence along with the use of a sh**ty stick and my hose pipe, I managed to clear the blockage. I even checked the front of the house to make sure everything was flowing correctly there. Thankfully, it was and I'd managed to sort it without having to call my dad, even though I know he'd have come down at his earliest convenience.

Shower
Having cleaned all used tools down and completed this unexpected and crappy chore, I must admit I felt "icky" so once I'd given my boots a good clean off, I came inside,I ran upstairs, dumped my clothes in in the dirty laundry and jumped directly in the shower. I didn't pass go, I didn't collect $200. I don't think I've ever appreciated a shower so much, apart from maybe when I got back from a 5 day Glastonbury festival with only babywipes for cleaning. I think I probably washed myself head to toe more times than I cared to count.

While I was using the bathroom, I did double check that the toilet was flushing properly and was a lot happier with how the water was going down after the flush.
So that was my crappy start to 2023, like I said at the beginning of this article, I still have a positive outlook for the year though. Did you have a crappy start ti the new year? Drop us  a message :)
