The Asus TUF FX505DT Gaming Laptop

November 6, 2022
Screaming Squid is now (part) powered by an ASUS TUF Gaming Laptop, and although we don’t game much, (if at all) the power in this Laptop is fantastic for some of the more demanding tasks we do.

The Specs

This laptop features an AMD Ryzen Processor with 8GB RAM and an NVIDIA GTX1650 Graphics Card. The Hard Drive in this Laptop is a 512GB NVMe Drive.

The Display on this laptop is a 1920x1080P display at 15.6″ It’s LED Backlit, with a Refresh Rate of 144hz. I still feel like I’m adjusting to the Refresh Rate, as things like mouse movement seem faster. The display on this laptop is crystal clear with great colour representation and fantastic viewing angles.

Upgrades

Because we are Squids, we naturally had to update the hardware just a little... The laptop can be upgraded with more RAM (we went for 32GB) and a second Hard Drive (an extra 1TB SSD worked for us). After these upgrades, we were left with one of the fastest laptops we've ever used. Just what we need here are Squid HQ

Energy Efficiency - A Tale of Two GPUs

This laptop features both an NVIDIA Graphics Chip, and an AMD chip, with the ability to switch between them to conserve battery, Having both is incredible for tasks such as Video Encoding and streaming, as it takes a lot of the workload away from the processor.

More Power = Better Software

I’ve been a keen advocate of Open Source Software for a long time, but after years of running with brilliant Open Source Software such as GIMP (for Image Editing) and KDENLIVE (For Video Editing) I decided that it was time to take another look at some of the new commercial software offerings for these tasks. I have switched to two incredible software alternatives in MOVAVI Video Editor, and Affinity Photo for Image Editing.

Having a new powerful workstation, along with some incredibly intuitive software, means Screaming Squid is primed for the future.

But.... what about Gaming?

Us Squids are too busy to game.... Though we did load up maneater. It ran flawlessly, but a mix of the fantastic Realtek Sound Chip, and the fact that the colour of the display is so good, meant we were too scared to play for long… Sharks scare us.
